DAYLIGHTING
Bring underground infrastructure into view before the next stage of construction.
See what is below before moving forward
Daylighting is the process of carefully exposing a buried utility so its position and condition can be observed directly. Plans and surface markings are valuable, but they do not replace a clear view of what is actually underground. When a project depends on knowing where a pipe or cable sits, a controlled excavation can give the crew useful information before more extensive work begins.
Bandit Solutions provides daylighting using dry vacuum excavation. Compressed air loosens surrounding soil while vacuum equipment removes the material. We do not use water to cut the ground, so the process avoids creating mud slurry and keeps suitable excavated soil available for on-site reuse. Our team works from Canonsburg across the Pittsburgh region.
A careful approach to utility exposure
Gas distribution lines, water mains, electrical infrastructure, and telecommunications cables all require a deliberate approach. Daylighting can expose a selected section for inspection, help confirm a proposed crossing, or support decisions about where construction can proceed. The objective is visibility and control rather than unnecessary excavation.
Before the work begins, we coordinate with your team on available utility records, markings, the work area, and site safety requirements. Air excavation is a tool within a wider safety plan, not a substitute for locating services or following utility-owner requirements. Conditions encountered below ground may change the plan, and the crew must be able to respond appropriately.
Common daylighting applications
A contractor preparing for a new utility installation may need to expose an existing line at a planned crossing. A maintenance crew may need access to inspect a pipe or fitting. A site-development team may need to confirm that buried infrastructure does not conflict with a proposed excavation. These are examples of where daylighting can support practical, informed decisions.
The scope can be a single exposure or multiple investigation points across a site. Share the location of each requested opening, the information you need to obtain, and any access constraints. Clear objectives help us plan the excavation so the work provides useful visibility without removing more material than necessary.
Dry soil and a cleaner restoration sequence
Traditional water excavation mixes soil with water. Dry vacuum excavation avoids that step, leaving suitable collected soil available for immediate backfill once the exposure has been inspected and the project permits closure. Keeping material nearby can reduce hauling movements and simplify the handoff between excavation, inspection, and restoration.
Project specifications still govern backfill and compaction. If soil is contaminated, unsuitable, or subject to special handling requirements, it may not be reusable. We discuss those limitations with your crew and account for them in the work plan. Dry excavation reduces water-related handling; it does not remove the need for responsible material management.
Support your schedule without water-refill cycles
Because our process digs with air, there is no digging-water supply to replenish and no water-generated mud slurry to dump. This removes a familiar source of interruptions from the operation. For sites with restricted access or coordinated construction sequences, fewer off-site trips can help keep the excavation phase moving.
Ground conditions, utility density, and the depth of the exposure will influence the pace of work. We assess the site rather than making a blanket speed promise. Our trained operators and high-capacity equipment provide the foundation for efficient work, while careful planning keeps safety and the purpose of the exposure in focus.
Discuss daylighting in the Pittsburgh region
Our office is at 1000 Noble Energy Dr Suite 140, Canonsburg, PA 15317. We discuss daylighting projects throughout Canonsburg, Pittsburgh, Washington County, and Allegheny County. Tell us whether you are preparing for construction, investigating a crossing, or arranging maintenance access so we can understand the required exposure.
Call 866-637-9822 or email info@banditsolutions.com during our Monday–Friday office hours of 9 AM–5 PM. Have the project address, available utility information, and your preferred schedule ready. We will help you plan the next step toward a clearer picture of the infrastructure below your site.
